All of the following weather conditions include signs of a tornado approaching:

  • Frequent, loud roars of thundering
  • Large hail particles without rain
  • A large, rotating wall cloud
  • Clouds of debris
  • A greenish, dark sky
  • Dying wind the minute before a tornado strikes

Although recent advances in technology have allowed meteorologists to better predict storm’s patterns, there are still unknown variables that can affect the likelihood of a tornado approaching. But even if there are still doubts of it touching down, taking precautionary measures to head for safety is extremely important.

When Do Tornadoes Occur?

Be sure to look out for these warning signs to protect you and your family from this disaster.

Tornadoes can occur at any time of day, although they are most common in the late afternoon to evening, from 3:00 – 9:00 PM. Many move southwest to northeast, but can move in any direction the window blows.

Speed of Tornadoes

The average speed of a tornado is about 30 mph, but can reach up to 70 given the proper conditions. They will also normally stay on the ground for about 20 minutes, and can even touch the ground several times in different areas.

Tornado Alley

A tornado alley is an area of the United States that experiences significantly higher frequencies of tornadoes. There are actually 2 in this country: Florida and the south-central area, including Nebraska, Kansas, and northern Texas.

Tornadoes in the south-central area usually occur in the late spring and those in Florida in the late fall. On the other hand, violent tornadoes, such as EF-5’s with wind speeds up to 200 mph, are rare. Of the average 1,000 twisters that touch the ground each year, only 20 are strong.

What to do During a Tornado Warning

If you are experiencing a tornado warning, get inside to the lowest level possible, preferably underground. Then follow these safety measures:

  • Turn on the radio and find a station providing updates about the weather.
  • Cushion yourself with a mattress or blanket to protect against any broken glass or flying debris.
  • Keep all pets in crates, or on a leash.
  • Stay away from the doors and windows.
  • Never try to “escape” the tornado by going outside.

Familiarize Yourself with Common Terms:

  • Thunderstorm watch: Severe thunderstorms are likely with large hail and wind gusts of up to 60 mph.
  • Thunderstorm warning: A severe thunderstorm is near and approaching. These warnings typically last between 30 and 60 minutes.
  • Tornado watch: A tornado is likely with severe thunderstorms. If you are under a tornado watch, it highly recommended to get inside immediately and follow the safety steps listed above.
  • Tornado warning: A tornado has been sighted or found on radar and is approaching your area. Don’t hesitate to take cover immediately.
